I hope the school year has been off to great start for your cub(s)! September flew by and it’s hard to believe October is well underway!
Your PTA has been hard at work behind the scenes this year! We were busy over the summer preparing for the upcoming year – a group from the PTA Executive Board attended training held by the Virginia PTA in July; we held a very well attended Kindergarten Welcome Party at Crump Park in August; we helped to celebrate “Back to School” by having a photo booth when the students came to meet their teachers; we worked to develop the 2019-20 budget; committee members were hard at work planning programs and events; and we prepared for our participation in Glen Allen Day. It was a busy summer! We hope that all that good planning will pay off for the 2019-20 school year!
We’ve started the school year off by doing a few things differently. This is a result of feedback we received at the end of last year. There were lots of questions on our budget process and the focus of our fundraising efforts and spending. In response to that, the PTA held a general session on September 26th to specifically talk about the role of the PTA and have a discussion on the proposed budget prior to approving the budget. We also made known our focus of our fundraising efforts this year. Our goal is to contribute to the existing school infrastructure funds raised in the past. The PTA has raised over $20,000 that has been earmarked for school infrastructure that will enhance our playgrounds/outdoor space. This is very exciting and a great way to compliment the completion of the school expansion project undertaken by the county!
You may have noticed if you went to Glen Allen Day that the PTA provided the inflatables free of charge. We did this to give back to our Cubs and to our community. One of our goals this year is to find ways to give back to our Cub families who have generously donated over the years. In addition to Glen Allen Day, our plan is to offer other community events, such as the Valentine’s Day Breakfast free of charge. We hope to find others way to make sure you know how much your support is appreciated!
Glen Allen is fortunate in many regards – we have an amazing staff full of caring teachers and administrators and we have a strong PTA with a healthy budget. When these two things work together, it’s amazing what can happen! YOUR PTA funds the following programs:
- School educational subscriptions
- Watch D.O.G.S. Program
- After School Enrichment programs
- Communications folder, seat sack and agenda books
- Field trips
- Science Fair
- Classroom teacher grants
- Department grants for each grade level, including art, music, library, special education, and physical education
We would not be able to do any of these things without the cooperation and commitment of the school staff and YOUR support.
Your support can come in many forms. The easiest is to join the PTA. By simply joining the PTA, you are contributing to our operating budget to keep many of these programs going. But our PTA can’t continue to support all these programs without additional fundraising throughout the year. Volunteering at various events and programs is another great way to show your support – just make sure you fill out the necessary paperwork for the school!

Attend a PTA Meeting
I get it. We are all busy and adding one more meeting to our list of things to do is not high on our list of priorities! However, by attending a PTA meeting you can help shape future programs at the school, get involved with planning events, and have your voice heard. We’d love to have you attend! The Executive Board meets generally on the 2nd Monday of each month (check the calendar) at 7:00 pm in the library. This year we are trying something new with our PTA meetings. We want to hold general session meetings in the winter and spring of 2020; like what we did in September. At these meetings, we hope to offer programs for parents on special topics in addition to providing updates on what the PTA is up to!
The PTA participates in several retail rewards programs:
- Box tops (both clip and scanned)
- Papa John’s
- Amazon Smile
Who doesn’t love some spirit wear?! Our PTA uses online ordering for our spirit wear. This way, you can get the size and style that you want! Using online ordering also saves the PTA money. In the past, we’ve purchased merchandise for onsite sales, and we end up running short on styles and sizes that result in left over merchandise that doesn’t sell. Purchasing spirit wear is a one of our bigger fundraisers and it’s a great way to
The Glen Allen Elementary School Yearbooks are so awesome! If you are new to the school, be prepared to be wowed! The yearbook committee does a fantastic job on capturing all the fun times and memories from the year. They are always looking for pictures – so make sure you send in photos from field trips, class events and performances! Be on the lookout, yearbook order forms will be coming home the week of October 21st. The cost for a yearbook is $22 each. The yearbook has a special ad section dedicated to the 5th graders.
Spring Fundraiser/Student Art Auction
This year we’ll be doing something different for the Spring Fundraiser. In the past, we’ve held the Silent Auction at the Cultural Arts Center. While that’s always been a great event, we’ve heard from folks that it might be time to shake things up and try something new! The PTA is in the process of making plans for a new Spring event as well as a new approach to auctioning off artwork from each class! Stay tuned! More to come!
Last year, the PTA initiated the Cub Fund. The Cub Fund replaces typical fundraising where kids (uh, parents) are asked to sell items or to raise money in other ways. In addition, typical fundraisers take a cut of the money raised. The Cub Fund allows us to raise money that all stays here at the school, supporting our cubs!
Feedback from last year encouraged us to slightly revamp how we do the Cub Fund. This year, we expect the Cub Fund to be our primary fundraiser, supported by other fundraising programs such as a spring event (previously the Silent Auction), spirit nights, spirit wear, End of Year Party, etc.
Assuming we meet our annual operating costs to sustain our current programs, the money raised from the Cub Fund for the 2019-20 school year will be added to the existing $20,000 earmarked for school infrastructure in the approved budget.
The earmarked money is expected to be spent during the 2019-20 school year on enhancing the upper playground (older grades). The PTA is working closely with Mrs. Pruden and the county to identify where and what options are available (i.e. play equipment). Funds raised from the 2019-20 Cub Fund effort will be focused on enhancing the lower playground (younger grades).
Our hope is to have a ribbon cutting ceremony in the spring of 2020 for the upper playground (so the outgoing 5th graders have an opportunity to enjoy it) and a ribbon cutting ceremony by the start of the 2020- 21 school year for the lower playground! We hope that you will consider contributing!!!
